Makaha Spot Guide

If you are on the West side of Oahu, drive west on Kamehameha Highway and past the town of Nanakuli to get to the famous surf break at Makaha. Wedged between Kaena Point and Waianae Range, it is home to 4 distinct surf breaks: the Point, the Bowl, the Blowhole, and the Inside Reef. Makaha is the Hawaiian word for “fierce”. In the winter, the legendary surf spot can create fierce sets as big as 30 ft high and is best at medium or high tides. The surf is rideable at any size and offers something for all levels. As the waves get bigger the lineup moves farther offshore, but there will still be surf close to shore or the less experienced surfers can watch from the beach.
