Rhode Island Surfing Information

Surfer's guide to travelling, staying and surfing in Rhode Island.

Rhode Island is a small state but it encompasses some of the best surf in New England, when the swell conditions are right. The areas around Newport and Narragansett offer a good selection beach breaks, exposed reef breaks and cobblestone bottom breaks. Matunuck, Ruggles, and Point Judith popular spots are some of the most popular spots come rain or shine.

Summers are small, fickle, and crowded. The dedicated bunch who wait out the summer lull, hit the beach in the fall when the crowds start to thin, the temperatures drop, and hurricane season approaches. Water temperatures can dip into the 30’s. So wetsuit, hood, and booties are a must in the winter, surfing in the snow is a possibility, and trying to keep your face out of the icy ocean is preferred. Surfing in Rhode Island means bearing bitter cold, conditions for the chance to surf perfect waves, virtually alone.
