Kauai Surfing Information

Surfer's guide to travelling, staying and surfing in Kauai.

Kauai is the oldest inhabited island in Hawaii but also one of the most rugged. It’s called “The Garden Isle” because of its lush rainforests. The Na Pali Coast on the northwest side is covered with dramatic cliffs and spectacular views but most of the coast is virtually inaccessible. Kauai offers about 50 miles of white sandy beaches with year round trade winds.

Although Oahu may have topography better suited for surfing, Kauai has tons of popular and secret spots that can work year round. North shore spots are the best in the winter. The most popular at probably Hanalei Bay and Cannons. Kauai has a strong rip current and beginner surfers may get caught up in a bigger set than they can handle. Many of the most amazing and remote spots are for expert level surfers and are accessible by boat of jet ski.
