If you are Sonoma County in the spring or summer drinking the local wine, hiking, or exploring the area on mountain bike, you won’t be disappointed that surf is flat and water is freezing. If you make it out during the fall and winter, pack your wetsuit (water temps are usually in the 50-60 degree range) and an adventurous spirit and you can find good surf without the crowds. Surfing in Sonoma doesn’t come without a few challenges, like, windy conditions and cold, rocky, shark filled waters. Salmon Creek is the favorite local spot, a river mouth breaking over a shifting sandbar. If you are flexible and lucky enough to find a good west to northwest swell Sonoma will have a working spot that may be excellent.
