Waimea Bay Spot Guide

Waimea Bay, located in the majestic Haleiwa town on Oahu’s North Shore may be the birthplace of the big wave surfing phenomenon that boomed in the 1950s to the 1990s. Like the other big wave spots like Pipeline and Log Cabins, Waimea Bay has the most epic surf in the winter months, drawing crowds to see its typical 10-15 ft waves. The beach really starts getting crowded when the 20-25 ft swells start forming. North swells bring a subtler take-off and a longer ride while a west swell creates a steep but short wave. There is a parking lot at Waimea Bay, but be prepared to walk, especially when the surf is cranking.
